And while World War 1 is less familiar to gamers than World War 2, some of those basic concepts should still apply. It calls to mind, of course, Battlefield 1, which took a trip a bit further back in time to make the surprisingly successful World War 1 shooter, utilizing the less-advanced guns and vehicles of the time to create a chaotic, disorienting experience that felt a world away from the precision offered by most modern shooters. I'll probably still spend my time getting blown apart, of course. Call of Duty will always be a twitchy game, of course, but I'm hoping that the return to slightly less absurd technology will slow the pace of things down just enough to start re-emphasizing tactics over reflexes. Those things are fun, of course, but they have a way of raising the skill ceiling and rewarding players with the sort of speed and reflexes I'm just never going to bring to the table: new game modes including the more linear, situation-based "War" should also make things interesting. For players like me, the combat might be a welcome change from multiplayer modes increasingly defined by futuristic abilities and fantastical weapons.
